My first visitation to the wine country and hence the beginning of my passion can be attributed to this event. In this month-long event, 25 Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries pair their wine with (mostly) in-house made appetizers. To be able to even come close to visiting most wineries in one weekend, local overnight stay should be considered.

TORONTO: Gourmet Food and Wine Expo – November 19-22nd, 2015.

The GFWE is one of the largest, if not the largest, wine related events in Toronto and as such, must be held at the convention centre. Yearly, nearly 45,000 people (personal communi-cation with an event organizer) attend this event and spend several hours walking around, sampling some wine, beer, the odd spirit, grab something to eat, check out a show or two, talking to the queen of Germany or some other tribute artist, sample some hot sauces and more. This event, as the name may suggest, has everything for the palate and a thing or two for the eye. Cost of a ticket only grants the admission to the event; sample tickets valued $1 each must be purchased and can be exchanged for wine/beer/spirits/food.

Situated in the Beamsville Bench, the Thirty Bench Wine Makers offers (as the name implies) a snowshoeing/hike through their vineyard. This outdoor event couples snowshoeing with wine tasting, absorbing interestingly presented details of winery’s past and present, and finishing with a small meal that, of course, is paired with some more wine.

NIAGARA: Niagara Icewine Festival – January 9-25th 2015.

For three weeks in January, the wineries within Niagara-On-The-Lake, Twenty Valley and the Beamsville Bench offer food and Icewine pairings. To make it more comprehensive, tickets are sold that grant participation at any 8 of the participating wineries inclusive Icewine and appetizer. Though the tickets are not required for participation, they are a more economical alternative to free-styling.

For a Saturday afternoon in May, the Crystal Palace in Picton fills with delegates and their wines from wineries situated within the nearby Prince Edward County Appellation. The ticket price allows entry and includes 10 tasting tickets for food & drink samples, a souvenir tasting glass, & admission to all seminars. Additional tasting tickets available for purchase on-site for $1 each, cash only. Various food is present throughout the venue.

BEAMSVILLE BENCH: Graze the Bench – June 6 & 7th, 2015.

The premise of the Graze the Bench event is to enjoy the late spring/early summer by leaving the car parked and walking from winery to winery, sampling wine, pairing it with food, listening to live music and just enjoying the pleasant outdoor temperatures. 8 wineries within the Beamsville Bench sub-appellation are involved and all-but-one are linked by an vineyard trail (Bruce Trail off-trail) whose creation and maintenance is sponsored by the ‘Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation’.

I have not yet attended this event, but in essence 6 chefs pair 6 wines straight out of barrels for a night to remember.
Taken from the websiteLegend has it that this event was thought of over a barrel tasting between Huff winemaker Frederic Picard and Chef Bryan Steele. While tasting the same grape through various barrel vintages they came up with the idea to match particular dishes with various barrel samples of chardonnay and pinot noir, Six Barrels for Six Chefs was born. Now in it’s sixth year, this event has brought smiles to hundreds of attendees and has successfully raised in excess of $50,000 for charity.
