Austrian tasting of mainly Grüner Veltliner wines presented by Andreas Wickhoff, Austria’s third Master of Wine, at the Fine Wine Reserve.

The 2013 Sattlerhof vom Sand Sauvignon Blanc (100%), aged in stainless steel tanks on lees for 5 months, has attractive aromas of stems, subtle lees, zest and pineapple on the nose and light lees, lemon and pineapple on the palate. It is a light bodied, extra-dry, fruity wine; with good acidity and a medium to long finish. Drink this refreshing wine with food; drink now to 2018. My impression: NICE, 88-89 pts – recommended for its quality and value. Tasted in Apr/14.

The 2013 Wieninger Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC was made with Grüner Veltliner (<50%), Weissburgunder (>10%), Welschriesling and Chardonnay varietals grown on Bisamberg and Nussberg vineyards located within Vienna’s city limits. It has fragrant aromas of muscat, melon, honeydew melon, pineapple and lime on the nose and melon, pineapple and lime on the palate. It is a light bodied, extra-dry, fruity wine; with refreshing acidity and a medium finish. This is a food friendly wine; drink now and for the next few years. My impression: NICE, 88 pts – recommended for its quality. Tasted in Apr/14.

The 2012 Nigl Gärtling Grüner Veltliner has subtle notes of wet slate minerality, and green apple and lime on both the nose and palate. It is a light bodied, dry, fruity wine; with crisp acidity and a medium finish. This is a food friendly wine; drink now to 2016+. My impression: NICE, 87-88 pts. Tasted in Apr/14.

The 2012 F.X. Pichler Loibner Klostersatz Grüner Veltliner Federspiel, sourced from Wachau, has light mineral aromas as well as lemon and apple notes. It is a light bodied, dry, fruity wine; with good acidity and a long, lightly creamy finish. Enjoy this wine with food; drink now to 2016+. My impression: NICE, 88-89 pts. Tasted in Apr/14.

The 2013 Loimer LOIS Grüner Veltliner Niederösterreich, aged on fine lees for 4 months, has perfumed aromas of green apple, gooseberry and light minerality on the nose and both yellow and green apples, lemon and light lees on the plate. It is a light bodied, extra-dry, fruity wine; with excellent acidity and a palate cleansing finish of medium length. Enjoy this wine with food or sip by itself; drink now to 2018+. The 2013 Loimer Langenlois Grüner Veltliner Kamptal DAC, aged in stainless steel tanks on fine lees for 4 months, has intense aromas of slate minerality, lemon zest, pineapple and juicy apple. It is a light bodied, extra-dry, fruity wine; with forward/crisp acidity and a medium, clean finish. This is a food friendly and sipping wine; drink now and for the next few years. My impression: NICE to BEAUTIFUL, 90 pts – recommended for both quality and value. Tasted in Apr/14.

The 2012 Loimer Langenlois Grüner Veltliner Terrassen Kamptal DAC Reserve, sourced from 20-40 year old vines and aged on fine lees for over 6 months; has rich aromas of green apple, melon, lemon, light butter and vanilla on the nose and green apple, lees, light butter and vanilla on the palate. It is a medium bodied, extra-dry, fruity to integrated wine; with refreshing acidity and a long, creamy finish. Though food friendly, this is a sipping wine; drink now and for the next 3-5 years. My impression: BEAUTIFUL, 91 pts – recommended for its quality. Tasted in Apr/14.

The 2012 Loimer Langenlois Spiegel Grüner Veltliner Kamptal DAC Reserve, aged in large oak casks for nearly a year on fine lees, has elegant, creamy aromas of gooseberry, pineapple and lemon. It is a medium bodied, extra-dry, fruity to integrated wine; BALANCED with good acidity and a long, lightly creamy finish. Enjoy this wine on-its-own; drink now to 2020+. My impression: BEAUTIFUL, 90 pts – recommended for its quality. Tasted in Apr/14.

The 2012 Heinrich Zweigelt, sourced from vines up to 30 years old that were then aged in large oak vats for about a year before bottling, has seductive notes of pine sap, violets, forest berries and pomegranate on the nose and stewed berries, and pomegranate on the palate. It is a medium bodied, extra-dry, fruity wine; with refreshing acidity, subtle tannins and a clean, smooth finish of medium length. Enjoy with food; drink now to 2018+. My impression: NICE, 88-89 pts. Tasted in Apr/14.

The 2012 Heinrich Blaufränkisch, sourced from vines up to 25 years old and subsequently aged in oak barrels for over 9 months, has appealing aromas of wood, dates and plums on the nose and black cherry and pomegranate on the palate. It is a medium bodied, extra-dry, fruity wine; BALANCED with forward acidity, refined tannins and a medium finish. Enjoy with food or by itself; drink now to 2018+.
