Being the first work day of the week, Monday is usually the most uneventful and unpopular day for many, especially in winter. This past Monday January 27th, 2014 started out to be no different though perhaps more frigidly cold; but was soon to change as WineAlign and Philippe Dandurand Wine Agency organized a winetasting dinner at the grand Rosewater Supper Club. The guest star for the evening was Josh Hammond, Villa Maria’s young winemaker overseeing Marlborough’s operations, and brought with him his wines to complement a four course dinner. The host of the evening was WineAlign’s Sara d’Amato, who at dinner’s beginning introduced Josh and Villa Maria winery and throughout the night complemented Josh’s stories in describing New Zealandian varieties and Villa Maria wines.

Rosewater Supper Club

Josh has been a winemaker with Villa Maria for just over a year, which may seem like a short time to be able to make a name for himself and to have his wines winning top awards. We were able assess his skills ourselves, since most wines we’ve tasted were his crafts. As Josh told us, he in fact has been growing up surrounded by vines, wines and winemaking, because his family owned a small vineyard giving him viticultural and oenological head start. Though taking a detour to study law, Josh didn’t find the passion and satisfaction that he was looking for and came back to winemaking by first studying chemistry and oenology.

On Mondays, Rosewater Supper Club is closed for private functions, which allowed for the 80 guests + 11 organizers/hosts to enjoy the evening, decadent dishes and aromatic wines that cool climate is excellent at creating. Upon entry, guests obtained well filled glass of 2013 Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc and a ticket, which was raffled off for a prize of 2009 Villa Maria Cellar Selection Pinot Noir magnum.

Wine reviews.

The 2013 Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc has intense aromas of pineapple, lychee, zest and gooseberry. It is a medium bodied, extra-dry/dry, fruity wine; with crisp, refreshing acidity and a clean finish of medium length. Though food friendly, this wine is quite enjoyable on its own; drink now – 2018+. My impression: NICE to BEAUTIFUL, 89 pts – recommended for its quality and value.
RECOMMENDED Score 89 pts. $16.95 LCBO 426601

The 2009 Villa Maria Cellar Selection Marlborough Pinot Noir, a blend from Wairau and Awatere Valleys that was aged over the winter on lees in French Barriques; has charming aromas of clove, faint smoked meat, cranberry and pomegranate. It is a medium bodied, extra-dry, fruity to integrated wine; balanced with good acidity, soft to refined tannins (decant for 30+ min) and a medium to long finish. Sip this one in a presence of good company; drink now – 2020. My impression: BEAUTIFUL, 91 pts – recommended for its quality.
RECOMMENDED Score 91 pts. $32.95 Vintages 285361
The 2010 Villa Maria Single Vineyard Southern Clays Pinot Noir, aged in French Oak (25% new) for 16 months, shows captivating aromas of thyme, meatiness, pomegranate, red currant and light wood and vanilla. It is a medium bodied, dry, fruity wine; with notable, forward acidity, grippy tannins and a long finish. At this point, it is a food friendly wine; it will benefit from cellaring for the tannins and acidity to come together – drink 2016-2020++. My impression: NICE to BEAUTIFUL, 90 pts – this wine won more than a handful of top awards and accolades.
